Budwig Protocol

Cottage cheese and flaxseed oil can help cancer patients?  You’re probably thinking I have gone off the deep-end and completely lost my mind.  Although I have had some serious lack of sleep lately, I assure you my mind is fully functional.  I even have the images to prove it.  :P

“The basis of Dr. Budwig’s diet or protocol is the ingestion of a special oil-protein mixture in the form of organic cold-pressed flaxseed oil plus cottage cheese or “quark” (a dairy product readily available in German-speaking countries made from various types of milk and roughly similar to cottage cheese), to balance an oversupply of omega 6 fatty acids and hydrogenated fats in the Western diet and to provide an immediately available abundant supply of essential omega 3 acids.”

Essentially combining the flaxseed oil with a protein such as cottage cheese allows the unsaturated fatty acids to become water soluble.  This is good for a dog like Kai, because it doesn’t require the liver to do the work of breaking it down.

If you think Dr. Budwig may be a quack, she truly had knowledge about the benefits of flaxseed well before our time.  Consider this info on WebMD on the benefits of flaxseed in relationship to cancer:

“Recent studies have suggested that flaxseed may have a protective effect against cancer, particularly breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. At least two of the components in flaxseed seem to contribute, says Kelley C. Fitzpatrick, M.Sc., director of health and nutrition with the Flax Council of Canada.

In animal studies, the plant omega-3 fatty acid found in flaxseed, called ALA, inhibited tumor incidence and growth.

Further, the lignans in flaxseed may provide some protection against cancers that are sensitive to hormones. Some studies have suggested that exposure to lignans during adolescence helps reduce the risk of breast cancer, Thompson says.

Lignans may help protect against cancer by:

  • Blocking enzymes that are involved in hormone metabolism.
  • Interfering with the growth and spread of tumor cells.

Some of the other components in flaxseed also have antioxidant properties, which may contribute to protection against cancer and heart disease.”

While we are not following the entire Budwig Protocol with Kai, there are benefits for dogs and cats.  Rather than paste all the info in, you can read it here – http://www.healingcancernaturally.com/pet-cancer-cure-testimonials.html  Not all animals may benefit from it, but we feel Kai is doing well with his daily mixture of 4T cottage cheese and 2T flaxseed oil.  Not only does he love it, but it provides him with the benefits of the nutrition found in both foods.  He comes running when he hears the blender!  This is certainly worth at least looking into if you know anyone with cancer.

Thanks so much, Susu! Definitely going to give this a try on the pups. Until all of this, I had no idea that canine cancer is so common.
